At least for a couple of years.
Why? Because with four manufacturers involved, including heavyweights like Toyota and Citroën, nobody will be crazy enough to join the championship.
At least not before some rule tweaks or something like that
*Toyota and Citroën cars are unofficial renderings.

This is what Citroen is using these days. The strange thing is, the road car is named DS and not Citroen anymore....

Citroen will be using the C3 for 2017, not the DS.

You’re right about that, but I just posted their 2016 car.

Ford/M-Sport. Hence the Asterisk.

Yes, but all the pictures Lightning Zone posted are of 2017 cars. That’s why they have all the extra vents and flares.

We’re running out of manufacturers that could be interested as well. Aside from Honda, GM via Opel, and maybe Mazda I can’t think of any manufacturer that has a car that could work and might actually have more than absolute zero interest in rallying.

How about Nissan?
They don’t have a car yet, but the next Micra(that will be based on the Renault Clio and will hopefully come to the US) could be a perfect base for a rally car.
Looks pretty good in concept form.

Nissan’s a possibility, I suppose. If they hadn’t killed off the hatchback version I would have said the Versa would have fit as a WRC car. I feel like Nismo is so committed to pavement these days though that WRC would be a tough sell. They’d probably also be feeling a bit gunshy about entering a new series after the Le Mans fiasco.

There aren’t many series that travel around the world. Cheap ones are even fewer. So if they want global exposure for low money, it’s either WRC or WTCC. Nissan is rumored to race in the WTCC with RML, but those rumors have been around for years, so I’m not buying them as I once did.
Still, four manufacturers are a lot.

Ford in the WRC will have the fate Chevrolet had, in the WTCC. M-Sport may be very competitive, just like RML was, but as time goes, they won’t be able to keep up the pace with the factory teams.

The difference is RML wasn’t selling 100+customer cars per year. M-Sport’s business with their R cars (R1-R5) is basically funding the team these days, and the demand is so high they had to pretty much double their workforce.

Probably won’t happen, but as Dusty I don’t see what manufacturers left that has a suitable car and rally interest. Honda is rumored to join rallycross in the GRC, and with Ford and Peugeot heavily involved in WorldRX I think that is a more likely step for Opel, Mazda, Nissan, Renault and Fiat.

Mazda doesn’t have money. They can barely sustain the minimal racing programs they have now.
And Fiat would rather invest the limited racing money it has into money producing brands, like Alfa Romeo and Maserati.
As for Honda, they are better off with a double GTE/GT3 NSX program, as people don’t think of Honda as a rallying brand, and it takes time to establish a reputation in the sport.

Of course, I don’t expect these manufacturers to go in with full factory teams, but rather heavily sponsor existing rallycross teams. It is a lot cheaper than entering the WRC, and there’s not a lot of other works teams there yet.
